What! Am I the worst Blogger ever?

So, tonight was our winter program which came out a million times better than this mornings run thru where, 1st grade powerpoint failed, my imovie would not work on the cafetorium PC, the lights on the back of the stage fell on top of my students as they danced, a 1st grader punched  another on the stage while decorating the Christmas tree as part of their performance. What!

But tonight my little Frozen people did a fantastic job they looked quite amazing in the suits, and gowns. We even had Elsa and Anna and Olaf( he was a crowd pleaser). I uploaded my Frozen imovie to youtube and launched it from their without a hitch.

Here is the link if your want to do a fun sing along in your classrooms.

Anywho tomorrow we  continue our frozen theme with a few games that I will posts photos of.

1. Snowball race- straws cotton balls and cups  Who can fill the cup with cotton balls by sucking through a straw.

2. Freeze dance- We are playing freeze dance and winners get Candy Canes

3. Candy Cane  Dissolving Experiment -  Here is the link with more info on this fun Christmas Science.

And I must not forget it is the last day for our Elf friend so guess what she hacked our Class Dojo.
Here is the link from Tatooed Teacher on how to change Avatars. She also reset all our points for the upcoming New Year. The kids will be excited to see this it is a great way to close the Elf on the Shelf.

The Grand Finale and best part of my night before the last day of winter break was when my old student from another school Angelina showed up at my classroom door with her little cousin and she said" Do you remember me?" I said no tell me your name. She said" Angelina" and it hit me like a lightening bolt I remembered her with her cute little bob, no braces and sweet smile. She was so excited and did not believe I remembered her. Then her mom and aunt walked over and I remembered them as well. She is in middle school now and quite a lovely young lady. I was in the midst of sending my current students off with their parents so I stepped away to dismiss a student. Angelina did not leave she was just standing outside my door.  Then, her mom came over and said"She wants a picture with you. Is that Okay?" I said of course but you are going to make me feel old though. She was very thrilled to have a photo with this old lady. It was great to see one of my little people grow up and become  an amazing young lady. In this hectic time when I just want to give up this experience reminded me to continue and do the little extras, book exchanges, winter shows, family projects, Frozen themed parties because they do remember and it does matter.
Happy Holidays Everyone!

What is hands on equations?

Well, this is a really great program to help students visualize algebraic equations. It is designed for grade 3 and up but now I teach 2nd. I thought, could they, is it too much, possibly this would fly over their heads? No, no and no are the answers.

I dove in with my seconds because they bombed the assessment on balancing equations. I mean boom there goes the whole city bomb. I thought I will just create some simple little balancing situations and see how it goes. We started with 10 = 5 + ---. Nailed it we moved on to working on some doubles work another Area of concern 8+8= 6+6+--. It took a bit longer but oh yeah! (This is a really cheesy oh yeah where you shake your head and make an awkward smile) they got it. We continued for 5 more minutes and I really was dumbfounded they were really making progress in this standard. Yay! I am going to try some more complex versions that are in the teachers Manual next week. Right on! ( again this is super cheesy 70's right on) second graders.

Well worth it!!! I will keep you posted on their progress.

Happy Friday!

What is Mt. Teachermore?

Growing ReadersWhat is Mt. Teachermore? Well it is not my phrase as much as I would love to claim it for my own ;it is the thought of the cool intelligent Kathy Collins. Yes, Kathy Collins,  a la
Reading for Real and Growing Readers

These are two amazing books, written by Kathy Collins, that helped me several years ago during my Reading Fellowship when I was attempting to craft a Reading Workshop in my classroom. Key word attempt: I look back on those days with bittersweetness. It was an incredibly exciting time I felt like a new teacher again energized and ready to dive in. However, it is like eating a bag of sugar you go go go go and then the sugar coma sets in and you   Reading for Realcan not move. These books and others were my sugar bag and Christmas break was my sugar coma. I read Growing Readers before going to Teacher's College University of Columbia Reading Institute in hopes that I would not be totally lost but those Teacher's College TCWRP consultants are insanely thoughtful and smart: I was still lost.

Lucky, for me and my teacher friend when we went to TCWRP, Kathy Collins was our session leader at the Summer Institute. She combined comedy and very thoughtful teaching practices which was so refreshing because the other consultants were so intense and amazing that I thought well this is not the right group for me. I cannot be this serious and intense this long. To quote Jay Z" work is not always hard" yeah! I enjoy my work sometimes it does not seem like work but these TCWRP folks speak English with such thought and precision it is just too intense for me. Kathy made me feel, even goofy me can put my own twist on this powerful learning and work and do this level of teaching in my rowdy classroom. Thank you Kathy Collins.  So, during her amazing session I went to this Saturday I gained a ton of insight and ideas into how I can improve my conferring and how I can better my shared reading and close reading. I often find one powerful way to improve shared reading  is to have literature and poetry that is amazing because then it is easy to sit back and let the words swirl around the classroom and turn in to magical teaching moments. I have already ordered one of here recommended texts in hopes it will arrive before Constitution day.

Thomas Jefferson: Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness by Maira Kalman
I want to use this as a Shared and Close reading lesson that to give the students a taste Jefferson and hopefully inspire some wonderings. I will post later on the results of our Shared reading. I wanted to at least share the title so you too can find this gem at your library, bookstore or amazon prime it, in time for Constitution day.

Conferring is the most amazing teaching tool that often leaves me saying Um Um Um well how do I push this little guy what question do I ask? So here is one big A- HAAAAA ( this sounds like the yahoo sound because it was more than just the regular a ha it was a A-HAAAAA) any way it is simple. Skill vs Strategy, What the Hello Kitty. Yes, Kathy this is a great topic so basically she says it is: skill: I can  Strategy: how.
Go ahead drop an anvil on my head that was so simple but so true. Ex: I can read tricky words and my teacher taught me the strategy of chunking the word into parts. Wow! this helps me I don't know about you. Anyway, during her session Kathy Collins said she had asked this question to all of Mt. Teachermore, Lucy Calkins, Kylene Beers, and so on. I thought wow very cool I felt like this conference was a chance for me to be around my Mt. TeacherMore.
Here are a few of the faces I was fortunate enough to learn from this week end:
And here is me taking that crazy photo every family takes when they visit National Monuments. Let's all line up and smile in front of this thing so we remember we are came here and were happy for a at least one minute.
My Teacher Friend, Kathy Collins and Me!
Check out the load of books we bought! Can you say teacher NERDS!
Happy Learning! ( FYI my hair looks so bad because the water went out in the hotel the morning of the conference in the middle of my shower)

Will I make it through back to School Night?

Well, I did. I made it through back to school night. With the help of my super duper Aide. Yes, I said aide I only have an aide because I have a student who needs a one-one aide. So, sometimes she has down time and she completes tasks for me. Today she saved my buns by helping me pull together my student handbooks.
So here they are. They were a free download from a super duper blogger. I will post her link in a future post only because I am writing this blog on my iPhone post.

All went well and I am super stoked because parents are using and checking our Class Dojo. I am in love again with Mojo! Here is an example yesterday I dismissed my class and her comes my fast talking twins dad. He said "twin 1 got a disrespectful on her Class Dojo!" What?you should have seen their faces. They said" Dad how did you know it is not Friday, teacher did not give us the reports." Dad" I signed up today at lunch. I guess I will be checking this at least once a week." Same face of fear, not surprisingly the twins had a much better day today. Then last night my friend whose name is a video game character and I often pronounce it as if I we were in the video game. He likes it. Well video game boy likes to leave his homework, stuff it on his desk, walk in circles so he can never find it, or my fav. The air search( you know where you look into the air and look for something that does not fly, you can even look left and right into the air and never find it) well grandma saw he had no homework and messages me on class dojo. Bam! I told her he Actually did do it in class he was clear. For today!
So, definitely check it out if you have not already. Class dojo is adding voice messaging, it is in beta now. I think that would be super cool especially for whole class message blasts. Maybe the student of the day can record the message or I can do it too.(because I really don't like the sound of my voice played back to
me) Very excited about this. So, I made it through back to school night and the week has been sucessful partly because of Class Dojo!

Happy Teaching!

How much do I love my big tpt purchase?

I can not believe how helpful my 2nd grade units of study for reading and writing workshop is, I mean really, really worth the big purchase.

Here is the link: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Units-of-Study-Bundle-Grade-2-10-Months-of-Reading-Writing-Lessons-w-CCSS-1072004#

It is by Jen Bengal and it is truly a time,no life, no allow me to actually have a life saver. I have been to Teachers College and learned from the amazing Lucy calkins how workshop works. I have kept up by following tcrwp on twitter and being a stenohouse and heinamann addict.

But this big purchase I made during the big tpt 28% sale was so worth it. Today really proved it to me. I was thinking well maybe I should just stop with launching workshop and get into it and prepare these lil people for their first benchmark. Well well well, today we did a writing lesson using the book Tuesday as our mentor text. If you have not read Tuesday it is just a beautifully crafted story that is driven by the amazing illustrations. So, the idea was that my kiddos were going to write the words by using the illustrations as a guide. We began and of course I could not find my copy of Tuesday so I found a youtube video and added it to my teachem account so it was cued and ready to go.

Dum dum duuuuuuum.....
Here they are frantically writing about the illustrations, giggling with delight as the story progressed, shrieking out please stop it here I want to write about this. I mean really. Loving this, budding little writers being created. They were utterly amazed at how much and with how much detail they were writing.

So, if your budget will allow and you have a bit of knowledge about reading and writing workshop this is a valuable tool to organize and gain ideas for mini lessons and independent student products.  I am truly impressed and after this lesson I feel confident I am really preparing these lil people to handle the common core.

Well, that's all for now.

Happy Monday!

How do ribbons and robots go together?

Well, I made it through week one of my first week at my new school teaching second grade.

Thanks to the help of my mother and brother we were able to pull together a decent looking classroom. Here is an old pic I found of my brother. Clearly, he is not this size any more or he would not have been that helpful setting up my room. He is now over 6 feet tall. My classroom library was in place in about 30 min because of my two helpers.

Now back to robots and ribbons.....Here they are.

Greeting my students and other guests at the door is this little robot guy.
My sink area was yucko and I just did not have time to jazz it up so I merged this robot and a really dreamy fairy tale mirror. The robot is from creative teaching press riveting robots collection and the mirror ikea.
Greeting us at the other door is this robot light and a picture frame with a bow. The picture frame has monthly subway art.
That is my idea is seasonal decor. Ladies I just do not have time or energy for too much more seasonal decor. I know I am a stinky grinch and I should find I way but for now this works.
We are they lions here. So,I found this 3- d lion from Darby smart to hang on my door.

Here is a tiny glimpse of the library and my math bulletin board. More robots!!!

Here are two ideas I got from pinterest and bloglovin. 1. Use clothes pins to put up student work the numbers are student numbers. 2. My mini robots are also on clothespins, hot glued to the back the I made one robot for each of the 8 mathematical practices, and turned them into compliments Ex:"Great looking for structure." The plan is to move the robot compliment clips on to the work of a student who is demonstrating that math practice. I also think it will help me figure out which practices we should focus on as a class and which we are showing strength in.
Math wall and my Sit Spots are very much in the skeleton stage. I do have ribbons on the math wall binder bins and robot icons on the math tool boxes.

Well, that is how robots and ribbon work together in August I am sure it will evolve as the year continues...

Happy Sunday!!!

Columbia University Teachers College

Does a big sister ever get pay off for accepting the torture and torment of a little brother? In my case maybe yes.  My lil brother is about ten years younger than me and while I was a teenager he was a little boy. For example: he would set off my car alarm over and over until I moved my car so he could play hockey in the drive way. ( that's how we play hockey on SoCal in the driveway on rollerskates). While driving his stinky friends in my car to hockey practice they would stick their heads out the window and scream at strangers. That is just a couple of the fun things that he did to me or with me depending on the perspective. Well, today some of my patience with his ways has paid off. So he is also much cooler  more courageous and adventurous than me so he moved to the big city NYC. I would never be able to do it I am way too shy, a suburb is where I am and probably where I will stay.

Well, he made friends in the big city and one of his friends was a daughter of a Marjorie Martinelli (consultant and author for teacher's college, Columbia). He ( the bratty lil brother) arranged for us to meet her and take a top secret tour of the teacher's college. It was not really top secret but nothing like what I saw when I attended the institute a few years back. She even gave me a copy of her book.
Umm this is pretty darn cool for an elementary teacher like me.  We met several other consultants and saw the children's library they use for research. Very cool experience!!! Thanks lil brother  for being cooler than me. I still however think he owes me one more for the time he took all the brushes and combs on a trip leaving me, with not one brush I had to put a hat on and drive to the store before work to buy a brush for my hair!

Happy Teaching!!!

What is Go Noodle!!!

What is Go Noodle? Well it is a restaurant in NYC but more importantly it is a super awesome tool that merges technology and physical movement. This generation which I am a little old for but definitely my girlies are a part of,well they are being accused of lack of activity. I see it, I see it. I used to play all day in summer with no supervision organized activities. My mother would kick us out and clean, do laundry, study for her CPA examine ( which she passed first try with 3 kids Brag, brag,my mom is smart! Anywho, she would kick us out and we would slip and slide, play with weird turtles we bought in Chinatown which I think are illegal for some reason but they still sell them, Ride motor cycles, yes we had dirt bikes and we also enjoyed beach cruising. FYI we lived on a cul de sac so very little traffic.

My girlies go from Soccer to dance to art to soccer travel team to soccer camp to art camp to play dates to recital practice to.... well you get the idea. My SVU has a lot of miles on it and lots of adult supervision.

Okay let's bring this back to the classroom. My students love tech and they also love to move it,move it. So, some smart NorCal cookie, ya know the folks up their where creativity seems to be in the air or passed out at the hospital when take home your newborn (instead of a diaperbag). Well, they came up with Go Noodle. I spread the word to all the teachers I worked with last year when I was out of the classroom and GO Noodle gave us head bands (aka the 80's style that is back, stickers pens etc....)  For my PD Seasions,Thank you so much they were a hit with the teachers in our sessions) since I did not have my own class my only real chance to see it in action was from,My teacher bff  and she said"she loved it, her kids loved it and so on and so fourth." I trusted her so I fully engaged in gonoodle during Summer School. I was not going to be the gummy bear teacher in summer school. I couldn't no way, must ....not ......be...... the ......gummy .....bear........ teacher........(that you should read like an action movie main character struggling to overcome the badguy moment) I wanted to employ some gamification and technology. So GO NOODLE it was.

After, morning warm up as the students finished I had them come to the carpet to share out their thinking and noticings from warm up. This is like 20 minutes; 10 to complete the task and another 10 for discussion of focused cognitive work that requires listening and building on thoughts of others as well as using math creativity to come up with your own ideas.  They did it almost everyday with very little prompting I know I know AWESOME SAUCE. Part, of it was that if they did a focused cognitively engaging job the reward was not a gummy bear but a GO NOODLE session.  I randomly selected a student who selected someone to pick a song/dance/movement activity.  It was 1-3 minutes everyone had to stand and those who were well they willing  jammed out. Seriously, they jammed like" go shorty its your birthday, we gonna party like it's your birthday, was pumping at the club.

I first thought I better roam and watch make sure everyone is
doing it. I found they were or they were at least standing. Then,I thought I better do it to encourage them. Guess what they did not care if I did it they were so involved in doing it themselves they rarely noticed me.  So, at least 2 times a week I took advantage of these 1-3 minutes and passed out work, set up Anchor Charts, changed job chart, organized materials for the day, updated attendance etc. It was Radical!!!!

So that is what Go Noodle is bringing kids back into loving free movement through technology. Thinking of the song " Video killed the Radio Star" How many times have you heard something like " Technology killed the Physical Activity."  Well, it did not kill it but redefined it, I think is a better word. Here are some intro video  https://www.gonoodle.com/how-it-works  I equate this to adults using the ifit or the log my jog apps. Sidenote: I really want an ifit. Just in case my husband reads this post.

Ifit does not send out cheesecakes if we meet our goals we just get an email or a screen telling us way to go you made it further but it works. I think gonoodle is going to be my staple classroom behavior reward and I am going to work to develop some other pieces that do not involve gummy bears, lollipops or prizes to discourage all that junkie junk and encourage movement and experience based rewards. I think this quotes ties up how I feel when some say tech is killing activity and joyous play. The go noodle   team of creative minds connected the dots between tech and joy and movement and teachers are loving them for it everywhere!  Thanks gonoodle team!

"A lot of people in our industry haven't had very diverse experiences. So they don't have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader one's understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have."

Happy Moving, Shaking,Getting Down and Joyous Learning!!!

When will Summer lazy days begin, Not Yet!!

Alright ,Okay so I finished summer school. Celebrated 4th of July then quickly moved into CGI math training.

My little girls had a great time at the LA Galaxy game plus firework show. We killed two birds with one stone. We went to our first professional Soccer/Futbol game and we saw a killer firework show.  By the way Galaxy WON!

I enjoyed the weekend and then prepared for my 1-2 hour commute each way to the Big City area for CGI math training. I had been implementing CGI for about 4 years, I read all the books, I have observed it in many classrooms, given intro presentations at the district level, facilitated CGI cohort groups at one of my school sites last year so I think it was about time to update my skills. So CGI calls it CGI for Non-beginners, not advanced or accelerated training they call it Non beginners, how very West LA. If you are from Cali you know what I mean West LA is it's own beast with a unique kinda like wealthy granola, nerd, hippie population.  Anyway the team of presenters were super smart and thought provoking in a very calm West LA way, Angela, Nick and Caralee.

I told my hopefully new administrator with confidence" Yeah,I know CGI I can help you really develop that here at your new dependent charter."  I guess I need to deliver. The entire teaching staff is getting training at the beginner or non beginner level this summer. Awesome SAUCE!!!! that I will be at a working in this environment but now I need to live up to previous statement.

So here are my take aways that I am needing to incorporate into my instruction next year.

1. Problem Solving is the heart of my math teaching and I need to give it the time it needs. I have previously worked at a Math Science Magnet and problem solving was not the heart of it I lost that and learned a lot about test prep and computational fluency so now I am working on a schedule that has embedded problem solving. The Cool Beans teachers that were at my table talked about how they do at least one if not two a day. I do not think I will get to 2 a day but a least one.

2. Counting Collections, I need to put this in my schedule for math starting day 1/2 and we need to do it daily in order to build number sense skills needed for the true algebraic thinking. We watched several videos and analyzed the students counting and reasoning skills the presenters did  an amazing job of pausing in places to allow us as teachers to speculate and analyze. That was Radical!!! and made the case for Counting Collections again.

3. Fractions, Fractions, Fractions, I started to play around with this idea of building fraction knowledge in the lower grades. I read the CGI fraction book and I experimented with some lessons and found first graders were way more flexible and understanding of fractions. I want to develop this in my second graders.  Here's an example:
Which is greater?

4/5 or 4/10

5/11 or 8/11
If I use my prior knowledge I am lost if I am more flexible these are super easy. I read this in the book but watching the kiddos share their thinking amazing.

4. Number Talks books. Have you read the Number Talks book it is quite amazing and it was used in my district I used it quite a bit. But building off the fraction idea and the upper grade ideas check this out:
How many wholes do you see?

Hello, Holy Moley Gucamole! is it one whole with 8 parts or 4 wholes with 2 parts or 2 wholes with 4 parts. Mind Blown! dots are for older kids too.

5. High Yield Routines
I read this book one afternoon while my kids were in the backyard swimming and playing. I thought maybe I can add something to my math wall. I skimmed it and thought bummer not to much but then I dug in and some cool ideas. If you number your students then create a set of equation cards that the you can pull and if the students number is the answer they are dismissed. How about if you seat your children in rows give them a coordinate number like 0,0 next 0,1 0.2 etc then give them answers and if their two numbers equal the number answer selected they are dismissed. The other piece is using these routines for assessments. That is a whole post by itself.
Happy Five for Friday!!!!

How do you use Green Screen into Summer School?

Well, Summer School has been over for about a week now but I am finally getting around to posting this my first attempt at Green Screen.  So, how did it begin it began with this I was teaching English Learner Summer Camp and the last week was a short week and we had to assess the little cuties so not much instruction could happen.

So, a light bulb went off and I thought Technology, English Learners, Listening, Speaking, Writing and visuals..... Yes Yes Yes and Yes these all fit together. To add an extra piece of connection electricity the theme of the English Learner Summer School was National Parks. ZZZZZZZ that is the sound of electricity in case you thought it was sleeping.

We learned about Yosemite and The Grand Canyon these two National Parks are close to us in Cali but not close enough for a field trip. How on earth could I take these kids to these places and show off the science and language learning??? Da da duummm GREEN SCREEN.  I quickly did a little research to find an app or something to make this work I found this app in the itunes store it is $2.99 it is called Ink Do Green Screen.
I bought it with one of the itunes cards I received as a gift last year from one of the teachers I was working with (Thank you). I then went to the lovely lovely amazon prime and tried to find an inexpensive green screen set up. I could not find one in my summer budget but I did find a screen screen and some clamps for under $20.00 worth a shot!!.

I was ready to Green Screen. Since it is a 3 hour 3 week program the little people were not going to be able to draft and revise their own writing at the level needed so we created a piece for each park together they provided the info from their learning and we drafted it on chart paper together. I was a little hesitant to do this because I really prefer them to own their own work but I refocused the objective of the lesson. I refocused the lessons into a close reading and fluency lessons. We worked on phrasing and reading with expression in fluency and for Close reading the students annotated their typed pieces (I typed up our collaborative writing pieces) they underlined tricky words, scientific words, parts to read with expression. They also put notes about what photos should be on the green screen during different parts of the pieces. Okay, I saw the value of this and to allow them choice I allowed them to choose either Yosemite or the Grand Canyon.  They took their pieces with notes home and rehearsed. The turn around had to be quick so I found images that night and had them ready for filming the next day. So Lights Camera Action 2 days worth of 30 min ELA lessons, one days worth of homework and here's what they came up with.

I usually do not put up names and photos but this little gal and family gave me permission. I was totally impressed with this sweet potato she did a great job and coached some of her peers. That is how I used Green Screen in Summer School? I am super excited to further use and develop curriculum for next year using Green Screen. In my new position!!!! I think I may even invest in a kit.

Happy Teaching!

What is it SUUUMMMMMMMMER!!!

Why yes it is! It is officially summer and boy am I excited. I am excited about the several new opportunities I have in the mixing pot for next year. I am excited to wear shorts and not worry if I will freeze with open toe shoes. My littlest lady celebrated her birthday this week YAY big woman. Anyway, here is my  It's Currently Linkup with Farley for June.
So, What would I do without Farley's Link Up?
Drawing me in and making me write
You've got my head spinning, no kidding, I can't stop typing now
What's going on in my beautiful mind?
I'm on a magical mystery ride
And I'm so dizzy, don't know what hit me, but I'll be alright

My head's under water
But I'm breathing fine
You're crazy and I'm out of my mind

Cause it's Summer
and I love Summer
All its Perfect Imperfections

What is World Book Night!

Well, well, well it has been a long while since I have been with you good old friend called BLOGGER. I missed you. I tried to log in. I turned on my computer I put it on my TO DO List but sadly sleep WON every time or soccer, work, cleaning my house, figuring out what to do for a job next year etc.... basically life.'

But yesterday I went back to one of my schools that I had given out books to 12 students for World Book Night. This was a new thing for my family this year. I saw a blog post about this last year and I immediately got on the mailing list and applied to give books this year.

We were accepted Hooray! So the premise is that you donate 20 books on April 23 (Shakespeare's Birthday) in your application you have to explain and share that you are going to be giving the books to people who need inspiration to become lifelong readers.  The books are donated by an outside donor and when you are selected as a book giver you are given a location (book store or library) where you pick up your books (no fee) and then you set up your giving events. You are trying to inspire other to become readers. Since my little ladies are read-aholics (seriously every time they win an award or accomplish a goal they want to go to Barnes and Noble) what happened to Chucky Cheese Please! Anyway! my girls passed out 4 books at school and I took 12 to one of my schools. I worked with the classroom teacher to select the best students for this donation. I added a little carrot, because it is a big AR Accelerated Reader School, I said any one who reads the books and takes an AR quiz and passes with 85% or higher I would buy them a gift card of their choice. So, yesterday I was walking down the hall and the whole class ran up and said 1 person got it she did it. 2 minutes later a happy little girl bouncy down the hall came and exclaimed she was the one. I was so thrilled she did it. She selected Best Buy for her gift card not only did she read it first but she  got 100% on the AR quiz.  Love It!!!! I can not wait to give her the gift card I am beyond excited that she has worked so hard all year to move to this level and she has not lost steam the last few weeks of school.

I recommend this experience it is a WIN WIN. My little ladies came home and said we decided to donate 2 books to the library and the rest we gave to 2  4th graders. My daughter was so excited that the librarian was so happy. They won because they got to feel to power of giving at such a young age and how some small acts of kindness really have BIG impacts. What is World Book Night? It is a great way to inspire readers and remind yourself of the power giving.  AND HERE THEY ARE APRIL 23's WORLD BOOK NIGHT'S NEW READERS!!!!  Thank you World BOOK Night !!!!

Finally I am Reflecting Again!

Mirror,Mirror on the Ipad where are you because I need you now?

Well, it has been awhile but I am finally up and running with my Reflector app it has been a long time since I have used it and I don't know why. I know this is no new trick but it is an old trick turned new again. I used it a bit last year in my fourth grade classroom and then this year I have not used it as much at all. I have been delivering PD and working in classrooms and schools that I am not used to and touchy wifi connections discouraged me.  So, I kinda gave up! But I have another PD coming up for the Summer sessions. My partner presenter and I really wanted to do a math PD day and I wanted to walk around. Why walk around because I feel so much more comfortable when I am not hooked to wires and I can move around the room. So, I tried it out at home and success, I had seen JoAnn Fox present (check out my earlier post) with no issues at one of my school sites earlier this year I felt motivated to reflect again.

Since we are doing a math session not only do I want to walk around I also want to show the work with word problems the teachers are working on in REAL TIME. This may seem simple but I have delivered PD earlier this year with no document camera and we had to go Old School ( stand up and show us what you did) then everyone leans over, squints their eyes, turns their good ear toward the speaker hoping to gain some insight from the words the speaker is saying. Then the poor presenter tries to be an octopus holding up a sheet of paper, pointing with one had, trying to hold up counters on a piece of paper to model their work, but of course they slide right off.

If you have not heard about it. You need to know the App is called Reflector and you download it on your Mac book or whatever other things are being called computers these days. I am shamefully a Mac girl but I just got an iphone last year, so to each his/her own.  Then you use the airplay on your ipad and Viola you will be reflecting. I am very excited about this I am making my prezo on Keynote just because I am afraid that an online tool may fail me and I can wing it if Reflector does not work on the network, eventhough I really really really don't want to, but if my whole presentations is unattainable WOW! I am not that good. Well Mirror mirror on the Wall where did Reflector Go? Nowhere I was the one who left and I did not like my time away from you so I am back.

So, check it out it will change your world as well.

Where or where did the Library Go?

As a child in upper elementary I was the kind of reader who read what was required of me in school and I read at a very rapid rate so it was a quick read for me I did not linger in the pages of any books. I did not love books until I read " A Wrinkle in Time" at the time I had no idea why this book changed my desire to read but now I understand why. It is a creative endeavor with bits of tech and great deep rich writing work. LOVE it!

I even spent a summer after this working in the local library in the Children's Section in a Library Volunteer program, organizing books, checking out books to the little ones, keeping the crayons bins full, hanging up coloring pages and most importantly my grandmother had to walk me over to the library at least 3 times a week and I got to stay 3 hours a day. The seeds of a Geek were being planted.

What changed I used the library in college but nearly as much as in elementary and middle school then as I went into my Masters program I literally never sit foot in a library by this time the internet was fully functional (no more crazy dial up sound) I really did not need it to do my research in a library. During my reading fellowship I fell in love with Amazon prime and my kindle app on my ipad it worked well to gather literature for research. Game Changer!  The only time I spent time with books was in the local book store.  My own children love the book store and in fact we really did not have library cards for many years.

So, Where did the library go? I started to ask and especially after learning about the amazing Augmented Reality book " The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore."  Hear is a quick look at it, the app by itself is fun but when you lay your ipad camera over the book the words are read aloud by an amazing voice actor and the book comes alive!  http://youtu.be/nmxuhGF1yj8

I thought about what would the new library of 2014 look like. I thought of course students will be creating AR or QR recommendations of books for other readers (The Brown Bag Teacher has a great post on this), chromebooks, ipads etc...

Wait! Why am I not using the library in a 2014 way?

So, I did a search to find my local library. I know they have audio books but I am not going to have some CD's in my cars and then drive them back to the library when they are due (or knowing my schedule late and then I owe the library 27 cents)
Seriously!  To my surprise my local library uses Overdrive an audiobook reader. WHAT!

I browsed their selection not bad not bad.
I put some books on hold. Then downloaded the app on my laptop and ipad/iphone. Then I found and ebook I wanted and guess what wait for it wait for it. I borrowed it using the kindle app and straight to my ipad it went. Holy Moly Gucamole!

I know none of this is new stuff but this is the first time I have had time to link and set all this up I feel like a 21st Century human. Of course it does not have everything I need but Amazon prime , kindle, Overdrive and my library together make an excellent combination.

Now, back to the classroom how and what will this be good for????
I have a fifth grade class working on Maniac Magee, so I downloaded it in my Overdrive and I thought what power this gives me as a teacher. When I am doing a read aloud I can embed stopping points and model, replay key points use Close Reading strategies more authentically because I am able to focus on words in the text and not reading the text so my students are engaged and understanding. I can roam the room and take notes. Possibly posting these on Padlet or Murraly then share this on Edmodo for future collaboration along with my students. This thought was inspired by a Around the Kampfire blogpost about Anchor Charts.  Well, the possibilities are endless but I feel great because I have found the Library? Where oh where did the library go? Well I had to wait for it............. wait for it....... until they caught up with the digital age but the certainly have done so. So, I welcome you back library I hope we will not lose touch again. K.I.T.
